07:27 am - Winter Travel Nightmare: A First -Person Account of the Mess in DC
We were supposed to fly out of Langley saturday morning and be home by late saturday night. Friday night, we are informed that our flight was cancelled and a new one booked out of DC for sunday morning. We had to somehow get to DC to catch that flight, so after some research we decided to take an Amtrak to DC from Newport News, VA. It was only supposed to be a 4-hour ride. It wasn't.

When we got there, there was a platoon(?) of Army folks waiting out there for the Amtrak station to open. They got dropped off there at 5AM and had to wait outside in the freezing cold and rain and wind for two and a half hours. We felt fortunate that our base was able to drop us off at 7 and let us sit on the bus until the station opened (go Air Force!) There were about at least 100 people in that tiny building trying to get on the train; everyone else apparently had the same idea as we did.

We got on the train and rolled out of the station at 9AM. Within an hour and a half we were stuck on the tracks for another hour and a half because 'the switches were frozen' (whatever that means). This frozen switch thing happened at least three more times on the way there. We began running out of food after a while, and the power turned off a few times. At one point, when we finally entered the DC metro area, the train stopped and reversed nd had to get onto another track. We didn't get off the train till 7:30PM, ten and a half hours after we boarded for a four hour ride.

Once we got there, we had to hunt down a cab that would take all 7 of us and our 18 pieces of luggage approximately 30 miles to our hotel, which we reserved the night before (thank goodness). We finally get into our hotel probably around 9:30-10:00PM, after each of us had to pay $50 for our cab ride and had to give the driver turn-by-turn directions to our hotel (it's only been open a couple of weeks). We are staying at The Westin Washington Dulles Airport, which is only 1.3 miles from Dulles, which will at least be a simple courtesy shuttle ride to the airport. It was a PITA to get there, but now that we're here things will be easier.

Late last night, around 12:30AM, I get a text from my NCOIC telling me that our flight for sunday morning was cancelled. Around 4:30-5:00AM, I get another text message telling me that we are stuck here till the 22nd. My boss is gonna be overjoyed when they hear about this; I already called my Practice Administrator yesterday and said I probably wouldn't be able to come in monday. Now I have to call her again and tell her that I'll be lucky if I can even come in on wednesday (don't know when on the 22nd we're flying out; there's gonna be a meeting later today).

This was a relatively boring and uneventful Annual Tour to Langley AFB VA, who knew it would end by being caught in the epicenter of the worst snowstorm that DC has ever seen (Dulles and Ronald Reagan Airports both reported record levels of snowfall). The only bright side to this whole thing is that I have finally gotten to see DC, the per diem rates here are through the roof (almost $70/day for food alone) and my orders are extended, which means more base pay.

I'm gonna go try and take a nap now; culdn't get any sleep last night. If anyone wants to read up on the specifics of my ordeal, go to my Twitter page, http://twitter.com/jenwilly

11:15 pm - whoa, another post? Can this be?
Well, I was so inspired by my post of the other day that I thought I'd give you all another one :o).

Thanks for the kind words of support everyone! I think I'll still look through the other coordinator's job ad just to see what it looks like, but I'm really not thinking I'll be applying. Again, too much to do here :o). I've started attacking the JETAA Florida webpage. I've told a couple of the officers about this and they have given me their wholehearted support, but I still need to officially ask permission of the others (especially the webmaster... who hasn't touched it in nearly 2 years). Eh, I'll do that later. They'll say yes. And if they don't... I probably will anyway. I mean, just look at this thing: http://florida.jetalumni.org/ Yeeeeah. Exactly. I'll show it to you all when I'm done. It's a lot of fun playing around with this stuff. I never really did before (I learned some basic, basic rudimentary webpage making skills in undergrad but that was it), so I love that I have the time and excuse to just basically play. And, um, yes, improve the quality and caliber of the consulate webpage (*cough* when I'm not disastrously messing it up, as has happened a couple of times) and promote the JET Program. And stuff.

I didn't get to work on the page too much today, though. Why? Because I had another project to work on, one I've been putting off for about a week (with good reason! I had 2 presentations to get ready for this week - one on Japanese folklore and one on Japanese robotics). I had to create an English version of a survey to send to various anime groups and other Japan-related clubs and organizations throughout Florida. Do you know how many anime conventions take place in Florida? Neither did I. My boss knew of about 2. My coworker had information for about 5 more. I found about 5 or 7 on top of that. And not all of them have contact information. Then I went to the webpage of every single Florida university I could find (luckily I had this from a previous project) and looked up "anime" and "clubs." Unfortunately, I didn't take into consideration that some universities prefer to have "Japan appreciation societies" rather than "anime clubs" until I was halfway down the list, so I probably looked over some people. I don't really care. I compiled a nice-sized list, put the survey together along with a second one for the consulate's use (the first was for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), and shot off the email. Voila. I actually started and finished a project in less than a day.

And what else did I do today? Well, I got to walk down to the ground level from our office on the 32nd floor. That was fun :oP. We had a building-wide fire drill today, which is fine and all that except we just did a consulate drill a couple of months ago. How many times do I have to march down those stairs? What, once every 6 months? Not cool! And my legs are going to feel it tomorrow. Not to mention, if you've followed the news at all, you'll know that we've been hit with unseasonably heavy storms. Yesterday all of the roads around the consulate were completely flooded. Cars drove through anyway, even though the water was higher than their tires. Traffic jams galore. Today wasn't as extreme as yesterday, but it still was pretty wet! My shoes got a little wet just walking in the rain this morning and my toes stayed clammy and cold throughout the day.

And it's Friday night and I'm staying in because I'm too tired to do anything else. I did go to the mall for a couple of hours with 1 roommate to do some Christmas and Abby shopping. Then next week I go to work on Monday, took Tuesday off, have the office party Tuesday night, and Wednesday I'm off to DC to see my family!
